Lendlease launches new protocol addressing Scope 3 emissions 0

At Climate Week NYC, Lendlease has launched an ambitious protocol to help tackle Scope 3 carbon emissions in the real estate sector. A sector that contributes a staggering 40% of global carbon emissions, Scope 3 emissions refer to indirect emissions created by businesses, such as upstream processes, tenant power consumption, or business travel.

Scope 3 emissions, which often make up the majority of an organisation’s carbon footprint, are especially challenging to address due to limited guidance and reporting boundaries – something that Lendlease is determined to change. In fact, Lendlease’s Scope 3 emissions make up an incredible 90% of its total carbon emissions worldwide.

The firm is taking action and has a clear goal to achieve net-zero carbon emissions for Scope 1 and 2 by 2025 with a target of absolute zero, including eliminating Scope 3 emissions, by 2040. This push is supplemented by the protocol which defines what should be tracked, measured and reported for Scope 3 emissions.

For instance, to measure Scope 3 emissions from purchased goods and services, the protocol outlines a reporting boundary to consider emissions from building materials purchased directly or through subcontractors at the product stage. This is just one example of how the protocol seeks to enable collaboration and dialogue across the real estate sector on how to report on and address Scope 3 emissions.

Cate Harris, Lendlease’s group head of sustainability and Lendlease Foundation, says, “To know where to focus our decarbonisation, we need to first know how we are accounting for our Scope 3 emissions – what is material and therefore, what is in and out of scope. If we can achieve this, then we can collaborate as an industry to solve the two big systemic challenges: the decarbonisation of harder to abate materials, and the digitisation and sharing of Scope 3 emissions data.”

Positioned close to the city’s main transport networks, the location of Marina Gardens Lane Condo offers convenient access to many of the city’s attractions. From shopping malls, cultural institutions, and buzzing nightlife, to a wide variety of waterfront leisure experiences. No matter what you’re looking for, you’ll find something to love near Marina Gardens Lane Condo. The area also provide outdoor spaces for relaxing walks and scenic views of Marina Bay, while various green spaces in the neighbourhood ensure plenty of room to breathe.

Lendlease’s protocol is a major step forward in the drive to reduce Scope 3 emissions, and in accelerating the decarbonisation of the real estate sector. With such an ambitious goal in place, the firm is determined to achieve net-zero carbon through both Scope 1 and 2 emissions by 2025, as well as absolute zero including Scope 3 emissions by 2040.
